Pour beaucoup de Montréalais, le premier contact avec les États-Unis s’est fait en visitant Plattsburgh dans l’état de New York; pour beaucoup de québécois, ce fut la côte du Maine, Hampton Beach au New Hampshire ou Atlantic City et Wildwoods au New Jersey.

Pour beaucoup, c’est la région de Burlington au Vermont avec ses belles montagnes. Pour moi, ce fut le lac Champlain à qui le fondateur de la ville de Québec a donné son nom bien avant ma première visite.

J’ai apprivoisé ce grand lac par le Québec en approchant de la baie Missisquoi; puis ma famille et moi avons pris un des bateaux qui fait la navette entre le Vermont et l’état de New York.

Pour ma femme et sa famille, ce sont les centres commerciaux de Plattsburgh qui étaient l’incarnation du rêve américain. Elle se rappelle de la fébrilité pour faire disparaître les sacs des magasins avant le passage aux douanes.

Pour ma part, je me rappelle des rondelles d’oignon et de mes premiers véritables hamburgers américains.Au gré des variations du taux de change entre les deux dollars, les chasseurs d’aubaines sont encore nombreux aujourd’hui à se rendre dans le nord de l’état de New York pour magasiner, visiter les grottes de Ausable Chasm ou marcher dans les sentiers des Adirondacks à Whiteface Mountain ou Lake Placid.

Depuis peu, le nouvel aéroport international de Montréal en sol américain vient de commencer ses activités en nous promettant des aubaines irrésistibles à moins de cinquante minutes du centre-ville de Montréal. L’aéroport de Burlington offre des vols à tarifs très intéressants depuis déjà quelques années. Les transporteurs actifs à Dorval devront surveiller cela de près; espérons que l’offre et les prix n’en seront que plus intéressants pour nous sans mettre en péril la rentabilité des entreprises qui nous ont bien servi depuis plusieurs années. Il n’y a rien comme la concurrence pour réveiller tout le monde et faire éclater la créativité.
